Hohe Tauren National Park

In our trip to Austria we were hoping to get away from the big cities and have some time in nature, doing some hiking. We were thinking of doing a day trip from Salzburg to Hohe Tauren National Park. First, can this be done as a day trip? What are the roads there like? How long does this take (without stoppine, though of course we will stop)? Would this be a good choice or are there other recommendations from the Salzburg or Vienna areas? Thank you.

That would a long daytrip, probably two hours by car in each direction. A nice daytrip from Salzburg is to Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein. You can ride the train to Bad Gastein, take the walking path to Bad Hofgastein (about 2 hours), and catch the train from there back to Salzburg.

All roads in Austria are excellent, though because of so many small villages and towns, it can b slow going off the Autobahn. Roads are well marked and the drivers are better than in the U.S.

There's also lots of beautiful hiking around Berchtesgaden (in Germany) about 20 minutes from Salzburg.

BTW, here's a link to the Hohe Tauren National Park: http://www.hohetauern.at/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=75&lang=en

Another daytrip from Salzburg is Steyr, a charming little town at the confluence of two rivers. In the month or so before Christmas be sure to visit the tiny village of Christkindl. The post office there is where all Austrian kids send their Christmas letters. Don't miss the Nativity scene.
