How do I know how much insurance to buy when I get to the rental car desk in Munich?

Nikki,
Don't buy any insurance. First, you're already covered for liability. For the optional CDW and theft check with your credit card before you go. If you use it pay for the rental chances are you're already covered for collision and theft insurance. It's free and has zero deductibe, unlike the coverage sold by the car rental company. Hi Nikki - Most credit cards cover the Collision/Theft(CDW) insurance. All rentals in Europe include liabilty and fire insurance.

So, assuming you are paying w/ a major credit card, you should probably decline all insurance offered at the rental desk.

Be aware that most credit cards do not cover CDW in Ireland or Italy. Also, some premium cars and large vans are not covered.

You should consult your credit card company for details.

A 'Capitol One" credit card CDW will cover travel in Italy. I researched this extensively with many phone calls. I had to do this because altho we are picking up the car in Germany, we are traveling to Italy also. Many companies will not cover Italy. Have fun, frreinke@sbcglobal.net

Another advantage to the Capitol One card is that it doesn't charge the 2-3% foreign transaction charge that nearly all credit cards do. You're right about Italy. You must purchase the collision and theft insurance. Pay attention, however, to the amount of the deductible

Hello - Most credit cards will cover autos rented in surrounding countries while driving in Italy. It all depends on where the rental commences. Rent in Western Europe and drive to Italy while relying on your credit card's CDW/Theft coverage....that is ok.

BUT, if your rental begins in Italy, you will have to purchase CDW/Theft from the rental car supplier. There is no getting around it.
