Plan to take a month or so in Set/Oct to see Germany, Austria, Switzerland by car. Would like to spend a week or so in 3 or 4 different place to use as a base for further sightseeing. Would like places in smaller towns, off the beaten track, where we can stay in town and mix with the locals when not off sightseeing. JIDI

Untours is a great, reasonably priced program that will let you do exactly that. See what they have to offer at www.untours.com. Otherwise find self-catering accommodations through local touris offices. Basketman

Jidi, I have the perfect places in Germany.. Read through my trip report, If you're going to be in southern Germany, which sounds like you are, stay in the smaller towns of Fussen Germany or nearby village of Hohenschwangau...Here is a trip report of my trip you can read http://www.bensbauernhof.com/chrisandkelseysgreatadventure2007.html
We stayed at Haus Weiher in Hohenschwangau, at the foot of the Ludwig castles Newschwanstein and Hohenschwangau.. From this location you could day trip into Munich, go to the Weiskirch Church, youc ould even drive a little west and go to the black forest, or go to any of the baths around this area.. You could go to Linderhoff, Ludwig's hunting lodge, ..IF you can't stay around Fussen, we drove through Reutte in Tirol, austria, wow, what a beautiful town, with the mountains as a backdrop..THere is so much to do in this area..
Then you head east and stay in Austria.. We stayed at the Gotzenbaunhof in Unken, Austria, wonderful place.. From here, you are 20 minutes to Salzburg, you are maybe 20 minutes to Berchtesgaden and maybe 25 minutes to Werfen Austria.. That is a really neat little town.. You could daytrip into Salzburg, this site has that Bavarian Drive you could do.. Going NW to Herishcimesee the Germany Versailles castle, that is a day drive, we didn't have time to do it but if you havea week in this area I would stay at the Gotzenbaunhof and day trip and xplore the area, fun, fun.. THen if you want to go to Austria, head east, we didn't go farther east as we headed to Italy. Good luck.

Overpriced compared to what? I assume you are aware that their prices include roundtip air from the U.S. and transportaton within Europe. Plus they provide in-country support, tips on local shopping, walking and hiking routes, and the landlords are famously helpful and friendly.
Yes, you can find cheaper rentals on your own, but unless you've seen them with your own eyes, or someone you trust has inspected them, it's a crap shoot. Commit for a week, two weeks or a month, pay in full in advance and then find out when you arrive that it's a dump.
Overpriced is a term I"ve not heard applied to Untours. Basketman
